VA Work-Study Position
With VTS
Eligible students using qualifying VA education benefits may apply for VA Work-Study positions with Veterans Transition Support. VTS Work-Study students help support daily nonprofit operations, programs, classes, outreach, and services for the military community.
THIS APPLICATION IS ONLY FOR VA WORK-STUDY POSITIONS WITH VETERANS TRANSITION SUPPORT.
It is not a general VA Work-Study application or placement service. We do not place students with other organizations.
LOCAL POSITIONS ARE PERFORMED IN PERSON AT THE VTS OFFICE IN SAN MARCOS, CALIFORNIA, AND AT ANY ADDITIONAL DUTY LOCATION SPECIFICALLY APPROVED IN THE STUDENT'S VA WORK-STUDY AGREEMENT.
Students may not work from an unapproved location or perform duties for another organization through this application.
WHO SHOULD APPLY
- Using an eligible VA education benefit
- Enrolled at least three-quarter time (subject to VA requirements)
- Want to work specifically with Veterans Transition Support
- Dependable and able to follow an agreed schedule
- Comfortable supporting a busy nonprofit environment
- Understand that VA determines eligibility and payment

WHAT VTS WORK-STUDY STUDENTS MAY DO
- Answer phones and respond to general inquiries
- Assist with class registration and participant communication
- Support OSHA, Lean Six Sigma, Coursera, and resource programs
- Help with office administration and records
- Assist with events and outreach
- Prepare materials for classes
- Support website, social media, or creative projects when qualified
- Help connect participants with approved VTS resources
Duties are assigned according to VTS needs, the student’s skills, and the duties approved under the VA Work-Study agreement.
EXPECTATIONS & SCHEDULING
- Up to 25 hours per week of enrolled credits (prorated for partial weeks)
- Schedule is set based on class times, office needs, and your availability
- Attendance and dependability are essential
- Follow all VTS policies, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards
- No use of a personally owned vehicle for work duties
- No school homework during paid Work-Study hours
Only approved hours and duties performed at an approved location may be paid by VA.
VA APPROVAL AND PAYMENT
VTS is an approved VA Work-Study work site. VA must approve both our work site and your individual Work-Study agreement before you begin working.
- You must be eligible and approved by VA.
- Work-Study hours are paid by VA, not by VTS.
- VTS verifies and submits your hours to VA.
- VA pays you at the higher of the federal or applicable state minimum wage.
Questions about your VA education benefits, eligibility, or payment should be directed to your school’s VA office.
IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
- You may work only at the approved locations and during approved hours listed in your VA Work-Study agreement.
- All duties must be related to veterans, VA benefits, or veteran services.
- A VTS supervisor will train and directly supervise your work.
- Time is tracked and reported to VA, records are required by law.
- Violations of policy or the Work-Study agreement may result in termination of your position and loss of benefits.
VA rules apply to all Work-Study students. VTS cannot change or bypass VA requirements.
